Hello Fellow Mamas,

Hunting for baby items in Jakarta can either be boring or a pretty exciting exploring experience!

Unfortunately, Amazon.com does not ship to Indonesia so YES we will be deprived of fancy designer baby items such as that oh-so-cool-looking Stokke high chair. Before you pack your bag and rush to Singapore to buy all your baby products, it might be a good idea to adjust your expecation. In fact, you can actually find many practical usable baby things in Jakarta, at a fraction of the price you'd have to pay in Singapore/ USA/ Europe!

Below I have compiled a list of baby stores in Jakarta I still go to or use until now~ I have found many many stores but below are my favorites; they sell products deemed safe by international standard (mostly in South Jakarta since that is where I live):

One stop shop (if you are a busy Mama)

Mothercare Indonesia
http://www.mothercare.co.id/
Pros: This UK franchise has all the baby basics you will need from Dr. Brown bottles to JOIE playard (they used to sell Graco but not anymore...). They also offer a baby registry system where you can leave your name and wishlist at the store, so your friends can just pop at any mothercare in Jakarta and retrieve your baby registry! Perfect for your bridal shower party in Jakarta.
Cons: Their price is 20% higher than other stores in Jakarta so I normally go to Mothercare only in emergency, i.e. I have to pick up something for my baby after work.

The Children Store
http://www.thechildrenstore.org/
Pros: This is the only store in Jakarta that carries Combi baby products from Japan! They sell a good range of stroller brands, car seat, Japanese baby products (toys, bottles, etc.).
Cons: Limited product line and relatively expensive.

Good Deal shops (if you wanna save $$ & feel like a local)

Suzanna Baby Shop
Jl. Metro Pondok Indah 33, Pondok Indah [the store looks like a house from the front! Look out for the signage!!]
Tel: 02175900826; 0217590080
Pros: This store is conveniently located near RSPI (Rumah Sakit Pondok Indah). Alot of Mummies will drop by here to buy their baby supplies after their appointment with their gynecologist or pediatrician in RSPI. The store is like supermarket style so no need for haggling and the sales person can be very helpful if you ask them for help~ Since the store is inside a house so your can alight from your car and enter the store immediately!! No need to fight for parking lot in the mall haha~
Great for all the baby basics! I love their newborn PJs, onesies... I bought all my newborn baby's PJs (Everyone recommended those button up types for newborn-1 month because the baby head is still soft)- the cotton is so soft I think they're better quality than some of the Mothercare products. Your baby will be spending 99% of their time at home so I decided to go for comfort instead of looks for the first 3 months ;)
Cons: Not much... Some people told me you can find cheaper products elsewhere like in ITC stores.

Fany Baby Shop
FANY BABY ITC Kuningan Lt.4 Blok B8 No.5, Jakarta Selatan
Tel: 02196969264
Pros: One of the cheapest store with good wide range of products in South Jakarta! You can find many imported products too like Avent/ Dr. Brown/ Puku/ Pigeon ... My baby loves their Japanese baby towel- so soft and water absorbent!
Cons: The place may seemed a little ghetto if you prefer high end malls like Pacific Place or Plaza Indonesia

Galeri Susu Rejeki Makmur
Fresh Market PIK, Lower Ground, Blok C No. 52, Pantai Indah Kapuk, Jakarta Utara
Tel: 02156984896 ; 02198556676
Pros: Hands down the cheapest store in Jakarta  for baby daily needs! Sometimes you will see mothers from Singapore buying boxes of diapers here and fly them home. Unfortunately, they only sell diapers (Mamy Poko, Merries, Nepia, etc.), formula milk (Enfamil, Isomil, etc.), baby snacks, baby food... (the kind that you need to stock up every month).
Cons: Well, it is located in North Jakarta and inside a wet market. Unless you need to stock up on your organic chicken and vegetable... A trip to this store can be a half-day road trip!

IKEA
http://www.ikea.com/id/en/
Last but not least, of course this store is worth mentioning! Just opened in 2015 and already making thousands of Jakarta Momsies high with happiness.
Pros: Well, it is IKEA so it must be pretty good ~~~
The must-buys: ANTILOP Ikea highchair with tray,  RASKOG trolley (this is not under the baby section but it is such a lifesaver!!! I use this to store baby bottles, diapers, creams, etc. My baby sometimes sleep+nap in her room/ master bedroom/ living room and all I have to do is push this trolley to reach for the baby basics),  KRAMA washcloth, GLIS box with lid (for cotton/ small items), TUTIG baby care mat (wow lifesaver for first 3 months, prevents pee2 leak on sheets and the color is lovely), ... And when your baby starts solid, they have a good range of baby utensils and that baby bjorn like apron-bib-cover~
Cons: A little far if you don't live in Alam Sutera/ BSD area... My advice is to go there on weekday morning. Take half day off from work, it is worth it rather than going on weekend when it is packed with family + kids, you have to wait at the register for at least half an hour and the toilets smell like vomit and pee.
Note: I do not recommend the KOMPISAR baby bumper. I find it too thin to provide the baby with any anti-bump benefits.

Jakarta Baby Online Shop! Just trending probably in year 2012... and all Momsies are super thankful that now their baby needs can arrive at the doorstep~ Woohoo!

TORORO
http://www.tororo.com/
Pros: Hands down the cheapest online baby store in Jakarta! Well, not as cheap as Galeri Susu but I love their product range, regular sales, and speedy shipping :)
Cons: You need to have bca klik pay or some sort of local online banking service since they have not yet accepted credit card payments. They don't have 24/7 Call Center.

Bilna
http://www.bilna.com/
Pros: They have wider range of baby products than tororo. Sometimes, they are more generous with their sales than Tororo.
Cons: Regular priced item are quite expensive! Sometimes the same price as Mothercare. Shipment is also slower than Tororo... They forgot to ship my item once but they immediately ship it after I make a phone call. They don't have 24/7 Call Center.

Do you know another good baby store/ babyshop in Jakarta? Please share !! ^___^

Gynaecologist: That First Scan

Hello fellow Mamas,

Your pregnancy test shows 2 lines, you decide to rush and get another one to double check... 2 lines again... your head spins giddy with joy/ disbelief/ shock? Congratulations, you're about to become a new Mom :)

On Day 1 or 2, a visit to the gynecology is highly advisable, and here are a list of decent gynecology in Jakarta, based on my experience and close friends/ relatives:

JWCC at Brawijaya (Jakarta Women and Children Clinic), also practice at Rumah Sakit Medistra
Tel: +6221 72788452, +6221 72799911, +6221 72799919
- Dr. Sukardi Gozali --> pro natural birth & speaks good English; likes to give thorough explanation that will help lessen your anxiety.
- Dr. Robert Alief --> he is neutral about everything & speaks OK English. Personally, not my favorite but my sister-in-law likes how he is chill about everything.

RSPI at Pondok Indah (Rumah Sakit Pondok Indah)
Tel: +6221 7657525
- Dr. Azen Salim --> as of year 2014, he was claimed one of the best gyne in Jakarta. Many of my expat friends told me great things about their natural birth experience with Dr. Azen. He speaks OK English.

Rumah Sakit Medistra near Kuningan:
Tel: +6221 5210200
- Dr. Dario Turk --> he is neutral & speaks good English. My friend had a complicated birth that went smoothly with his help.
- Dr. Rama --> he is a bit old but very well-known for the experience under his belt, he is pro C-section & does not speak English that well.

Tips:
1) Don't forget to bring your insurance form! I used Bupa International and all my medical bills from the clinics above were reimbursed by Bupa~
2) All the docs above are pretty popular so it would be wise to book the first appointment in the morning. Take half day off from work, it is worth it~

Hello fellow Mamas or Mamas-to-be!

Being pregnant, giving birth, and raising a baby in a developing country like Indonesia can be a huge challenge, especially if you are used to life abroad. The "lost in translation" moments, the traffic jam, air pollution, and lack of healthy organic food options can all roll into a giant stress ball.

If you're nervous about being pregnant, and eventually a Mama in Jakarta, you have found the right site~ you may read on...

The first day I discovered I was pregnant I was scrambling for obstetrician/ gynecologist contacts but most of the doctor reviews can only be found in Bahasa Indonesia forums. In fact there are hundreds of reviews on doctors, baby products, etc. but all in Bahasa Indonesia forums, which sometimes are peppered with unreliable advertisements on China baby products.

To cut the long story short, here I will try my best to write short simple reviews on all the basic things you will need to know on being a Mama or Mama-to-be in J-town.

xoxo,
